Naturopathic Psychotherapy-What is it?
Naturopathic Psychotherapy describes healing the mind and the emotional body naturally without drugs
and medical interventions. Furthermore, it presupposes that the mind and body are unified and one
cannot be healed without the other. A more descriptive term would be "Naturopathic Psychosomatic
Therapeutics." This is not based on rigid Freudian or Jungian concepts but on fluid and biologic Reichian
concepts. Dr. Wilhelm Reich, was a student of Freud redefined and carried Freud's work further. In the
United States he made tremendous scientific discoveries, one of those being orgone energy. He
essentially created "bodywork" in terms of psychotherapy. In orgone therapy, one releases emotion and
learns to function in a more movable and contactful existence. Which is finding ones way back to feeling
and humanness. This is a far cry from laying on a couch, talking for an hour and leaving or just popping a
few pills. Although this may work for some, others may be searching for something more fulfilling.
Naturopathic Psychotherapy-Don't Be Fooled
You may have heard this term loosely, it is a hot topic right now. Do not be misled, the very term
naturopathy describes the ability to heal the body through natural means; water, air, sunlight, earth
(food/herbs). The founders of naturopathy such as Lust, Kniepp and Dr. Henry Lindlahr's original
intentions for naturopathy was to balance the body into healing. As to provide a clean and healthy
environment for the body to heal itself through the fever and acute crisis. Suppressing; symptoms,
fevers, infection and the acute was never apart of the original meaning for naturopathy. As you can see,
because of lack of understanding, insufficient training and a competition with allopathy-many so called
naturopaths do not follow or intend to follow this meaning. They instead have recreated naturopathy.
Why? A drive for profits and a realization that many of their clientele do not intend to heal but intend to
suppress. This creates a sort of can't beat 'em join them mentality and even I myself find myself continually
educating people about the importance of healing over suppressing.
Natural Body/Natural Mind:
To heal chronic conditions of the body/mind, we must therefore, utilize a form of healing the mind which
directly concurs with living a natural lifestyle and natural health for the body. The natural therapeutic
model by Dr. Henry Lindlahr in the early 1900s, indicate healing the body cannot be accomplished by
repressing acute illness, ie., fevers, rashes, etc (Lindlhar, 1985). Likewise, the mind cannot be healed by
repressing or bypassing acute feelings or "non-feeling" in the form of apathetic numbness in the present.
The very by-laws of natural health concedes the importance of movement of illness and emotions through
and out of the body. This is why only orgonomy/Reichian psychotherapy is substantial enough to be used
in Naturopathic Psychotherapy. Truly, Orgonomy is naturopathic psychotherapy and all modern therapies
we have now such as somato-emotional release, Feldenkrais, and Energy Psychology are all derivatives
and off shoots of Dr. Reich's research and discoveries 75 years ago.
Why Not Freud or Jung for Naturopathic Psychotherapy?
Though there is a time and place for Freud's psychoanalysis and Jungian analytical psychology, let us not
forget that most of these are used in conjunction with drugs and a mind only approach. It was Reich
however who changed the meaning of psychotherapy by proving that the body expresses the mind and
that treating the mind symptomatically is primarily useless. To quote Reich in his book "Character
Analysis," "The defect [of mental resistance to healing] is essentially of a purely bio-physical nature.
Complaints are the expression of the vegetative, muscular armor. Therefore, the patient complains of an
affect-paralysis because the body's plasmatic currents and sensations are blocked."
Reich was the first scientist and psychologist to see the mind and body as one and to scientifically prove
his findings. Furthermore, his work is the only psychotherapeutic model that is in keeping with the
foundations of naturopathy. In regards to expressing rather than suppressing Reich said, "In orgone
therapy the [emotional/physical block] is loosened by means of biophysical methods and not by means of
psychological. For the first time in the history of medicine...which is built and maintained by the fear of
organ sensations, has found its medical opponent. This is our great obligation: TO ENABLE THE HUMAN
ANIMAL TO ACCEPT NATURE WITHIN HIMSELF ...TO STOP RUNNING AWAY FROM IT. If we do not muster
enough courage to maintain this insight we will fail as psychiatrists, physicians and educators." (Reich,
1972).
Body and Mind perspective:
From the book "Reichian Growth Work" by Nick Totton and Em Edmondson
"Every illness is the expression of a complex and long standing set of issues involving interpersonal,
social psychological and biological factors. Physical symptoms are the bodymind's attempt to resolve
conflict, to break free from the constraints of armouring (armouring is Reich's term for chronic muscle
tension and emotional holding back by which almost all adults are imprisoned).
Dr. Aurore's Perspective:
Dr. Aurore, having been treated with orgone therapy for over 8 years believes it is advantageous to heal
the body and mind with Reichian concepts. She has directly credited orgone therapy (Naturopathic
Psychotherapy) for healing her son of autism. It is important to understand that healing with herbs and
detoxing only goes so far. Ultimate healing has to be founded upon releasing the energetic tension and
the neurotic pull-which is literally pulling one back from healing in the form of resistance. This can be
accomplished most significantly with orgonomy, which will help one see that which is keeping them from
health and healing.
How Does Dr. Aurore Practice Naturopathic Psychotherapy?
As a naturopath doctor she provides natural therapeutics as outlined in her book "Beyond Natural Cures,"
by utilizing the work of Dr. Henry Lindlahr and also such modern advances in healing such as color
therapy, sound therapy, homeopathy and aromatherapy. By studying in a three year somatic
psychotherapy program she is developing a better understanding of how to prevent mental disease and
find mental health through such means as reattachment and simple emotional release. Dr. Aurore does
not practice psychotherapy but refers all mental illness disorders to licensed Reichian psychologist and
orgonomists. This provides a comprehensive program of naturopathic psychotherapy-naturally healing
the body and mind.
Why Psychotherapy?
Because color and sound therapy can bring many repressed feelings and emotions to the surface, it is
necessary that Dr. Aurore works along with a highly qualified Reichian psychologist. One can heal acute
disorders easily, however, without effectively addressing underlying repressed issues-the core of the
sickness, the chronic-cannot be healed. If healing chronic disease is your desire, it can be done! Provide
for yourself the importance of healing the body and mind together. This is especially prudent for parents
of sick children. A unified effort of understanding and mental health is a primary catalytic factor in health
and healing any and all disorders.
